2013 Relay For Life Chairwoman Karen Earnshaw

A young woman was riding on a bus home from a doctor’s appointment during rush hour in downtown Seattle when she turned to a stranger and blurted, “I don’t want to die.”

The stranger held her hand and said, “You won’t.”

That young woman was this year’s Relay For Life of Florence Chairwoman Karen Earnshaw, whose story was just one of many stories of survival during Monday night’s kick-off at Best Western Pier Point Inn.

The gathering, which featured speakers, music, a silent auction and food, was a lead up to the Aug. 9-10 event in Florence. Plans are being finalized with the Siuslaw School District to hold Relay at Hans Petersen Field.

Relay For Life events, which raise funds for the American Cancer Society (ACS), are held throughout the world. In addition to support services for cancer patients and their families, ACS is the No. 1 funder of cancer research, next to the federal government. In Oregon alone, ACS has provided $6 million in active research grants for ongoing studies. Nationwide, there are 937 grants in effect, totaling more than $470 million. Past funding has resulted in breakthroughs like the pap smear, bone marrow transplants, mammography, the PSA test and the drug Gleevec.
