Posted: Friday, Feb 1st, 2013

FOSS—Carl H. Foss, 88, of Florence, passed away Jan. 26, 2013.

Carl was born May 8, 1924, in Florence. He attended school at the Cushman Grade School, graduated from Siuslaw High School in 1942, and Oregon State University in 1951.

Carl served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He operated a cafeteria in the courthouse in Albany, Ore., where he made very good food and tasty cinnamon rolls that people truly enjoyed. He also owned the Owl Café in downtown Albany and also Charls on Highway 99.

He eventually moved back home to Florence in 1977 and opened Charls Pancake Haven where the old Rite Aid store is located today. Many good times were shared and many new friends were made from all over.

He started another Charls on Highway 101 in Florence in 1982, which is still in operation today. He has gone full circle and will be greatly missed by all those that knew him.

He is survived by his loving wife, Charlene, of Florence; and sons Kirk, Dan, Don and Derry; his daughter, Kirby; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and a son, Dennis, in 1982.

At his request, private cremational rites were held through Burns’s Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home.
