Port of Siuslaw Manager Robert Forsythe attended a meeting in Brookings last week called by Congressman Peter DeFazio (D–Ore.) to discuss options for coastal ports. Port officials have been informed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that there are not enough funds in the budget for dredging some ports, including the Siuslaw.
The crowded meeting included DeFazio, other elected officials or their representatives, port managers, the Corps of Engineers and concerned citizens.
A statement from DeFazio prior to the Brookings gathering said the meeting's purpose was “to review and exhaust all options to ensure dredging continues at small ports in southern Oregon.”
The congressman had written Col. John Eisenhauer, head of the Portland district of the Corps of Engineers, to request the meeting.
