Posted: Tuesday, Feb 12th, 2013

PHILLIPS—William Edward “Willy” Phillips, 69, of Florence, passed away Feb. 8, 2013, due to complications from diabetes.

Willy was born Aug. 27, 1943, in Cottage Grove, Ore., to Edward and Peggy Phillips.

The family moved to Florence in 1949,where Willy was raised and went to school, graduating from Siuslaw High School in 1962.

Willy began working at the IGA grocery store in Florence while in high school. He learned to play the electric bass guitar in 1963 and joined the local popular band, The Intruders, and the love of playing music took over.

Although he worked in grocery stores on and off after that, he was a musician the rest of his life, playing many different venues, traveling and settling in Eugene, where he played for 20 years with the Billy McCoy Trio at the Embers Supper Club.

His other passion was playing golf. He loved playing the game with his granddad, brothers and friends.

Willy is survived by his mother, Peggy Phillips; younger siblings: Mike Phillips and his wife Joan, Kathy Grimes and her husband Bob, and youngest brother Bob Phillips; his niece, Lani Phillips; the Funke family in Pleasant Hill, Ore.; and many relatives in Jacksonville, Fla.

Willy loved his family, his many friends and music, and he will missed by all who knew and loved him.

God bless you, Willy.

A celebration of life will be held at the Florence Events Center, Feb. 23, at 1 p.m.

Donations can be made in Willy’s name to the Diabetes Foundation.

Burns’s Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
