Plans are under way for the Florence chapter of the Oregon State Police (OSP) Volunteers to help patrol around Siuslaw schools.

I think it will help everyone out a little bit, said Jim Sievers, chapter chairman.

The Florence chapter formed in 1994. Funded by community donations and grants, its more than 20 volunteers patrol campgrounds and waysides from Yachats to Reedsport.

We provide a visible presence, another set of eyes and ears, explained Sievers, adding that their presence alone can often deter crime.

Their patrols are in addition to Florence Police Department and police auxiliary patrols.

The OSP Volunteers, in clearly marked cars, have no authority to make arrests and will contact the proper agencies to handle problems, depending on the circumstances.

In a possible truancy situation, for example, school authorities will be notified. If an emergency response is warranted, 9-1-1 is called. Volunteer patrols are during daylight hours.
