At its Wednesday night meeting, in a 4-1 vote, port commissioners changed the rules for selecting officers from a rotation schedule to election.
In past years, offices were rotated, from treasurer to secretary, to second- and first- vice presidents to president. No commissioner filled the same office for consecutive years.
Under the new rules, at the first commission meeting in July of each year, officers are elected and can fill the same office for consecutive years.
Commissioner William Fleenor was against the change.
“There are some political overlays to this type of situation where the majority of the board will always have its president,” said the commissioner.
“The minority commissioners will never rotate into the presidency, therefore the district is always going to have less representation as a result.”
Fleenor cast the dissenting vote.
