A symbol of hope for some, the ice machine on the Port of Siuslaw wharf was removed with little fanfare early Thursday morning for transport to Astoria. The now disbanded Siuslaw Fisherman’s Association (SFA) worked since 2004 to have an operable machine, with the purpose of attracting a fish buyer, a small fishing fleet and related jobs to the community. After fundraising, grants and loans, the machine operated for a short period before breaking down. Expenses became insurmountable for the SFA, which sold the refurbished machine to Bornstein Seafoods. The money from the sale, after satisfying a loan, was donated to the Salmon Trout Enhancement Program.
