Department of Revenue fax back online

Posted: Thursday, Mar 7th, 2013

SALEM---The Oregon Department of Revenue suffered interruptions in fax service that affected taxpayer communications to two of the agency's key return processing units.

Since Friday afternoon, March 1, Revenue had received more than 600 fax submissions to its Electronic Funds Transfer Unit (EFT) and Suspense Unit that were incomplete due to service problems.

"Taxpayers sending the faxes would have every reason to think they had a successful transmission, but we received a distorted or partial image," Policy and Systems Manager Megan Denison said.

Revenue is asking all taxpayers who recently used the affected lines to resend their faxed information as soon as possible. The agency can identify the senders of about a quarter of the failed faxes and will attempt to contact them, Denison said.

The Suspense Unit announced this afternoon that its fax lines are working again. Taxpayers and tax practitioners can resume using 503-945-8786 and 503-945-8009 to transmit documents.

Revenue continues to urge people who tried to fax documents during the outage to send the requested material a second time, via either fax or mail. Officials have determined that the outage occurred due to a hardware failure in the state's phone system.

The outage did not affect any taxpayers attempting to file their 2012 tax return. Revenue does not allow taxpayers to file their current-year tax return via fax. The outage only affected people's ability to provide additional documentation in response to questions concerning their return. It also affected the ability of businesses to file paperwork related to Electronic Funds Transfer accounts.
