Past meets present

Specters haunted the halls of Siuslaw Elementary School this week, but students weren’t spooked by their messages from the grave. The apparitions, also known as the John Quay Heritage Players from the Siuslaw Pioneer Museum, told of their lives in the wilds of the central Oregon coast, some arriving as early as the 1870s, others after the turn of the last century.

There was Clara Gamble Haring, the first woman of European descent at the North Fork of the Siuslaw. Haring and her husband Amos settled there in 1879, eventually raising nine children. She recalled trading with the Siuslaw Indians, receiving salmon for her garden vegetables.
