William Francis Carroll

CARROLL—William Francis Carroll, 88, of Florence, passed away March 20, 2013, in Portland, Ore.

Bill was born on May 23, 1924, in Terre Haute, Ind., to Harry Francis and Gertrude (Reed) Carroll.

Bill served with the Marine Corps during World War II, enlisting in 1942, and volunteered with the Marine Raiders (Carson’s Raiders) later to become the 4th Marine Regiment, 6th Marine Division.

He participated in the invasions of Bougainville BSI 1943, Guam “44” Okinawa “45” and the initial occupation of Japan “45.” He was wounded twice and received two Purple Hearts for bravery.

He married Anna Grace “Ann” Mengel on Nov. 28, 1946, in Cleveland, Ohio. From this union they have four children.

Bill work for more than 30 years, 1949 to 1989, in the transportation industry serving as CEO, president and vice-president of operations for several businesses. The family lived in the Terre Haute, Ind., area for 30 years. After retirement, Bill and Anna moved to Florence in 1989.

Bill is survived by his children: Nancy Carroll of Portland, Ore., Dan and Kathy Carroll of Portland, Ore., Kevin and Joana Carroll of Florence, Ore., Tim and Elizabeth Carroll of Nashville, Tenn.; and grandchildren: Tanika Arnold and Sam, Brian, Grant, Lori and Luke Carroll; and four great-grandchildren.

Graveside services and military honors were held March 26, at 2:30 p.m., at Willamette National Cemetery.
