Modified: Friday, Aug 28th, 2015

CONTRERAS—Milbrey Amelia Caskey Contreras, 92, of Florence, passed away March 18, 2013.

Millie was born June 28, 1920, into a family of eight children in Greenville, Ky., to parents Charles and Willie Moore Caskey. She moved with her family to Redlands, in Southern California, as a child, then returned to Kentucky.

Marrying during World War II, she settled again in Redlands where she served as PTA president for Crafton Elementary School, which her daughters attended.

After divorcing, she moved to Riverside, Calif., where she raised her three daughters on her own as a loving and dedicated mother. She then worked in the restaurant business and met and married Maurice Contreras.

She continued to work until they retired to Florence in 1986. With friends from California visiting every month, they both enjoyed a wonderful retirement of family, friends and fishing.

Millie lost her husband of 33 years in 2003, but remained in Florence, enjoying the company of family and friends and working in her lovely garden.

She traveled to West Linn, Ore., every month or so to spend time with her two daughters, Diane Field and husband Richard Williams and Kathleen McDonald and husband Arnie Peterson, and enjoy visits with grandchildren Devin Field and his wife Shelley Peng and grandson Scott McDonald.

Her daughter Pamela and husband Alan Thompson as well as grandson Brett Thompson and granddaughter Kristie Marie Parada and her four children visited often from Southern California.

Other relatives include Chris Williams and wife Sue, along with Ruthanne Roussel and husband David from Aloha, Ore., and granddaughters Aria Antsey and husband Jon and Kathleen Tolley and husband Roger, from Seattle, Wash., and Yakima, Wash., respectively.

Millie recently attended the graduation of grandson Patrick Peterson from the Los Angeles Police Academy in Southern California.

Millie and her husband, Maurice, counted more than 40 children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren among their descendants as well as many nieces, nephews and grand- and great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Carley, Melvin and James Lee, and a sister, Judy.

Maurice’s daughter-in-law, Judy Samuelson, and husband, Rick, of Grants Pass, were special friends.

Millie moved to West Linn, Ore., in late October 2012 to live with her daughter, Kathleen McDonald Peterson and husband, Arnie.

She had frequent visits from her sister, Marie Vevers, and many phone visits with sisters Mabel Carey in Kentucky and Ruthie Daniels in Garden Grove, Calif., during that time.

She continued helping with garden ideas and enjoying the birds and wildlife on the Tualatin River rapids as she fought a courageous battle with cancer until her death.

Milbrey Contreras will be greatly missed as she was loved by all.

A family gravesite service will be held May 18, 2013, in Florence.

Arrangements are being handled by Burns’s Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home.
