Dolores “Dee” Wirt

Posted: Friday, Mar 29th, 2013

WIRT—Dolores “Dee” Wirt, 84, passed away on March 21, 2013, shortly after being diagnosed with lung cancer. She died in her home, which she loved, with her daughter by her side.

Born Dolores Marie Conway, the second daughter of James Conway and Marie Rice Conway, on Oct. 16, 1928, in Detroit, Mich., she attended primary and high school as well as community college in Detroit.

She married Howard Wirt in 1950 and enjoyed many adventures, including owning a plane that they both piloted. She liked to tell the tale of how she walked away from a crash landing after she ran out of gas. She loved living in Detroit.

In 1961, a move for work took Howard and Dolores to Smithsburg, Md., where they raised their family. Dee worked as a bookkeeper and business manager for Carpets Inc. and then Carpet Gallery in Hagerstown, Md.

In 1992, she retired to Florence.

Her vivacious personality allowed her to quickly become part of the Florence community.

Dolores loved people and made many close friends in her 21 years living in Florence.

She found great pleasure in volunteering at Florence Food Share and was actively involved in her church, St. Mary’s, Our Lady of the Dunes Catholic Church.

In her retirement, Dee “Dee-lightful” led a healthy active lifestyle. She loved water aerobics, first at the Mapleton pool and later at Coastal Fitness.

Dee used her quick wit and humor to make people feel comfortable and happy. She believed in living simply and helping others less fortunate. Her bumper sticker read: Peace begins when the hungry are fed.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard, and her sister, Elaine.

She is survived by her daughter, Kemberly of Ashland, Ore., and son, Mark, of Shepherdstown, W.V.;
four grandchildren: Jessica, Caitlin, Noah and Anika; and one great-granddaughter, Allison.

Dee was one of a kind.

All who knew her were blessed.

She is sorely missed but her laughter can be heard and felt at a moment’s notice during good times and bad.

On Friday, April 12, a funeral Mass and luncheon will be held at St. Mary’s, Our Lady of the Dunes Catholic Church, 85060 Highway 101 South.

Everyone who knew her is welcome.

Donations can be made in her name to Florence Food Share at P.O. Box 2514, Florence, OR 97439.

Burns’s Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
