George “Ron” Vestey

Posted: Tuesday, Apr 2nd, 2013

VESTEY—George “Ron” Vestey, 77, of Florence, passed away on March 23, 2013, at RiverBend Hospital after a brief hard battle with cancer.

Ron was born in Wilmar (now known as San Gabriel), Calif., on Feb. 21, 1936.

He proudly served his country for four years aboard the USS Minnetonka while in the U.S. Coast Guard. He then had a long, satisfying, 28-year career as a Los Angeles County deputy sheriff.

He and his wife, Norma, visited Florence in 1999 and fell in love with the people, sense of community and natural beauty of the area.

They retired to Florence shortly after their first visit.

Ron was a good-natured and generous man devoted to his family and community.

His community dedication was highlighted by his 43 years of continuous and active participation as a member of Kiwanis. He worked hard with its American Flag Program, was a Florence Food Share volunteer, and a master “soup kitchen chef.”

Ron is survived by his wife Norma; sister Sharon Yeates; son Erick Vestey; daughter Pamela (Jayson) Steckler; and grandchildren Bryan, Michelle and Hannah.

He will be missed deeply by all who knew him.

A memorial celebration will be held in Ron’s honor on Sunday, April 14, from 3 to 5 p.m., at Thornton’s Café on Highway 101.

Come and celebrate our friend’s life.

Donations in his memory can be made to Florence Food Share or the Florence Area Humane Society.

Burns’s Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
