At its meeting last week the Florence Urban Renewal Agency penciled out some ideas for the coming year’s projects and goals, and managed to add quite a few to the “done” list.
Since the agency formed in 2006, it has been a driving force behind many projects, big and small, most recently and most noticeably, the massive infrastructure upgrade in Old Town, which will move to the “done” list some time in May.
The agency has aided such other projects as the bulb-outs and pedestrian lights on Highway 101, the Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center, the Senior Center, Siuslaw Public Library, the Maple Street boat dock and rebuild of the commercial wharf.
In addition to the major construction projects, FURA has awarded improvement grants to many small businesses in the urban renewal area, most in Old Town. Sites that have been upgraded include businesses that have since changed ownership or operators, such as the Chicken Coop and Homegrown. Long-standing businesses include Traveler’s Cove, Siuslaw Coffee Roasters, Kitchen Klutter and the Florence Area Humane Society, among others.
