Though looking a bit soaked and dreary from recent rains, Florence’s Department of Public Works says construction of the Siuslaw River Bridge Interpretive Wayside, as well as a parking lot under the bridge to the west, is still on schedule. Work continues this month on the Siuslaw River Bridge Interpretive Site in Old Town, where crews recently finished installing the project’s concrete retaining walls and backfilling the area in anticipation of laying the foundation next week. Excavation and in-water work on the site was completed earlier this year.

“We’re still on target for a ribbon cutting during Rhody Days,” said Shawn Penrod, executive assistant for the Florence Public Works Department. “That’s what we’re shooting for.”

The 106th Rhododendron Festival officially kicks off Friday, May 17, and runs through the weekend.
