Viks shine at rainy meet

Modified: Tuesday, Apr 9th, 2013

Siuslaw senior Katy Potter crosses the finish in the anchor leg of the 4x400 relay in Junction City on Saturday. Siuslaw senior distance runner Hayden Schaffner celebrates after securing the win in the 4x400 relay. Schaffner also won the 400-meter event.
After hosting its annual Icebreaker track meet, it seemed appropriate the Viks were in Junction City heating up the track beneath cold and rainy skies on Saturday. As coach Chris Johnson has said, “running in the kinds of weather that we deal with on the Oregon coast prepares you in ways other teams aren’t.

“In that way, bad weather plays to our advantage sometimes.”

On Saturday, a combination of inclement weather and talent made the Vikings the front runners in every distance race. The boys’ team, which retained its state 4A title this year, was a dominant force in the 400-meter, 800-meter, 1500-meter, 3000-meter and long relay, winning all five events, including a sweep of the top three finishes in the 1500-meter race.
