Port campground spruces up

Posted: Tuesday, Apr 9th, 2013

Port of Siuslaw’s campground has undergone many upgrades and improvements to attract visitors, including the completion of a new bicyclist/hiker site, right, that uses materials recycled from the wharf improvement project.

The estimated 10,000 recreational bicyclists and hikers per year who travel through Florence will hopefully linger a while longer, now that the Port of Siuslaw has created accommodations for such visitors.

The sites at the port’s campground, which is within walking distance to Florence businesses, were suggested for development by area bicyclists and hikers who met with Port Manager Robert Forsythe earlier this year.

“They said it was something that was really needed in this area. We realized we could put it together fairly inexpensively,” said Forsythe.

Located behind sites with full hookups and amenities for RV enthusiasts, a tent area is on level ground recently planted with grass. The $8-per-person sites provide views of the Siuslaw River estuary. Windbreaks and tie downs for equipment and bicycles at each spot are created with recycled materials from the recent wharf improvement project. Potable water is available at four spigots. The campers will also have access to the campground’s laundry and showers.
