County measures call for tax increase

Posted: Friday, Apr 12th, 2013

Four county measures go out for vote next month, not all specific to Florence residents, but all affecting our area one way or another.

The deadline to register to vote is April 30. Out-of-country ballots have been mailed and out-of-state ballots go out April 22. Regular ballots will be mailed May 3. Election Day is May 21.

Measure 20-214: The Mapleton Fire Department is asking voters to renew the five-year local option tax for general operations, which currently imposes a 70 cents per $1,000 of assessed home values.

The Mapleton Fire Department, according to the notice filed with the county, provides emergency medical services and fire protection to more than 500 households across about 25 square miles. Its equipment is aging and upkeep of the facilities, such as costs for fuel, insurance and maintenance, is getting more expensive, which will hinder the departmentís ability to provide services.
