Florence family physician Paul Pearson had little time to rest after finishing his first Boston Marathon on Monday before two bombs exploded in the crowded streets near the finish line. Three people were killed in the blast and more than 175 were injured, 17 of whom are in critical condition, according to recent reports.

Pearson and his wife, Rachel, were joyously walking back to their hotel room after the physician had completed the 26.2-mile course when they heard the first blast.

“It was so loud. It didn’t sound like anything we had ever heard before. We knew it was something major,” said Rachel Pearson. “Paul was still kind of wobbly. He needed to get more fluids and eat something substantial.”

After the second blast, the couple began to see people with wounds hurrying by. In the initial confusion, they saw first responders running in the direction of the blast zones. Medical personnel began performing triage on the streets. As tired as he was, Paul Pearson immediately fell into his role as doctor.

Soon he was aiding victims: first a woman with a gash on the right side of her neck, followed by a young man with blood flowing from a puncture wound.

The sight of the young man prompted a woman from a nearby restaurant to arrive with a table linen to stanch the flow of blood.

Dr. Pearson then advised the victims to get to a medical facility by private car or taxi, because their wounds were such that they required treatment, but did not need to go by ambulance.
