Local electric utility district Central Lincoln has received multiple reports from customers who have received telephone calls from scammers who claim to represent Central Lincoln. In the scam, the caller tells the customer that his or her bill is past due, and electricity will be shut off unless they pay an overdue bill immediately using a credit or debit card.
“We do not call customers who are late in paying their bills,” said Central Lincoln’s Customer and Energy Services Manager Dennis Hinton. “We only do notifications via mail, and scams like this are one of the reasons why. If a customer is late paying a bill, we send out a reminder. If the bill still is not paid, we mail them a disconnect notice about 10 days after that. I recommend to any Central Lincoln customer receiving such a call to tell the caller they know the call is a scam, and to hang up immediately.”
The Central Lincoln People’s Utility District serves about 700 square miles and approximately 55,000 people in portions of Douglas, Coos, Lane and Lincoln counties.
Central Lincoln can be reached via its website, www.clpud.org, email at firstname.lastname@example.org, or by phone at 541-265-3211.
