Three outstanding senior girls will vie for the title of Queen Rhododendra at a coronation ball and as part of the annual Rhododendron Festival. The ball is being held in conjunction with the Mapleton Senior Prom, on Saturday, May 11.
Last year’s reigning queen, Marisha Reavis, will return to announce the winner and crown this year’s queen.
The 2013 Senior Rhododendron Princesses have participated in numerous community service and public speaking events, and have been selling this year’s commemorative festival pins as part of their court duties. Their community projects, as well as the time they spend as mentors to junior court princesses, are rated with a kind of point system, part of which goes into the decision-making process for selecting the queen.
This year’s queen will be awarded the crown based on those cumulative points and by an anonymous panel of judges that will rate the princesses’ ability to effectively communicate their chosen platform topic.
Later in the month, a reception for the entire court, their sponsors and invited guests will be held, and the princesses will be recognized for their individual achievements and awarded monetary scholarships from the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce. This event is scheduled for May 23.
