Mark, set, go Dunes City to host triathlon

Posted: Tuesday, May 7th, 2013

Dunes City’s Fred Hilden shows the starting point for the swimming leg of Saturday’s US Bank Triathlon and Duathlon in East Woahink Lake Day Use Area off Canary Road.

Dunes City and 50 volunteers are ready to take the plunge, as will a group of athletes who plan to swim, bike and run in the Inaugural US Bank Oregon Dunes Triathlon and Duathlon to be held this Saturday in Dunes City.

“I think this has so much potential to become an iconic event that in the future we will see people from all over the United States wanting to participate,” said Fred Hilden, city recorder.

Hilden has been working many hours off the clock to help bring his and the city council’s dream to fruition.

“Here we are, a small community without a tax base, and we are pulling off something that some larger communities have not been able to do,” he said.

The idea was born about two years ago after a city budget meeting, when Maurice Sanders, then a committee member, now a city councilor, broached the subject.

“He said, ‘One of the things you should try to do is get on the bandwagon for a triathlon to promote this area and bring in some revenue.’ I don’t know why, but I just latched on to that idea,” the city recorder recalled.
