Voters in the 25-square-mile Mapleton Fire District will decide in the May 21 special election if the district’s five-year option levy should be renewed.
Renewal in the form of ballot Measure 20-214 will continue the levy at the current rate, 70 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value.
Carol Baxter, fire district board president, said that without the levy, which raises approximately $39,000 each year, the local volunteer fire department would have to make sacrifices.
“This whole department is a vital necessity to this small community. (Without the levy revenue) we would have to cut training schedules. We would not be able to update equipment. The turnouts (protective clothing) they wear now — if anybody looked, they could see they need new ones, at $2,000 each,” said Baxter.
The board president said she knows times are tough for many of the 500 households in the district, but the district is not asking for a new tax, “just a continuation of what we have now.”For the complete article see the 05-11-2013 issue.
