Library director earns statewide honors

Steve Skidmore

The Oregon Library Association (OLA) recently recognized Steve Skidmore, who has been director of Siuslaw Public Library District for the past 16 years, for his successful career in Oregon libraries and his years of outstanding service to the association by awarding him an Honorary Lifetime Membership to OLA.

Skidmore was surprised with the award at the association’s annual conference, held this year in Vancouver, Wash.

“It was a great honor to be recognized,” he said. “I’m grateful to all the people who wrote letters to nominate me.”

In their statement congratulating Skidmore, OLA officials said the library director “has served the organization in a number of capacities and richly deserves the organization’s thanks and appreciation.”

OLA is the state association of 1,200 library professionals that promotes library service through public and professional education and cooperation.

Diane Bailiff, Siuslaw Public Library District board president, said the board was proud to learn Skidmore was to receive the honor.

“During his tenure as director, the library has seen so much improvement. We think about him as being ours, belonging to the Siuslaw district, but the whole state has appreciated him and that is what this award is about. This is statewide recognition of Steve’s service to libraries in Oregon.”
