Rhodies in bloom: Itís time for the biggest festival of the year

Rhody Days are here, the 106th Annual Rhododendron Festival, sponsored by the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce. Festival officials are expecting crowds from all over the state to ďCome See What We See,Ē the chamberís theme for the town of Florence.

The festival weekend actually started Wednesday with the return of the Davis Shows Northwest Carnival at the Port of Siuslaw. Davis Shows have been coming to Florence for more than 60 years and will be open through Sunday.

All the shops and restaurants in historic Old Town are spruced up and energized, joined again this year with a vendor fair on Maple Street between Bay and First streets. The fair is open between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Expect to find a wide variety of snacks and meals and a total shopping experience while strolling the streets of Old Town.

The 2013 Rhody Run kicks off early Saturday, starting at 9 a.m. at the Florence Events Center (FEC) on Quince Street. This is the 35th running of an Oregon classic. The race course for 2013 takes runners and walkers from the events center through the Bay Street district, along the Siuslaw River and scenic Rhododendron Drive and back to the FEC.

The Junior Parade marches out of Miller Park today at noon, down Oak Street from 19th to 30th streets.

The Florence Kiwanis Club hosts its annual Kidsí Games following the Junior Parade at the Siuslaw High School ballfield at Oak and 27th streets. There will be games and activities with prizes and snacks for all participants 10 years of age and younger.

The Siuslaw Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society holds its annual flower show and plant sale today and tomorrow at the FEC. The show includes a rhododendron leaf display and an art show by elementary school students.
