Easy does it: Mapleton School District adopts 2013–14 budget with little fanfare

School Board Chairman Carl West and Superintendent Jodi O’Mara are all smiles following approval of Mapleton School District’s 2013-2014 budget.


With angst over school budgets throughout the state and the country, Mapleton School District’s uneventful adoption of its 2013-14 budget, at $2.7 million in general fund revenues, is exceptional.

“We didn’t really have any challenges,” said Superintendent Jodi O’Mara.

The district based its figures on the governor’s 2013-2015 biennium education budget of $6.5 billion, which does not include any Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) reform or other revenue from the state.

“There is a potential that it could go up $6.75 billion with PERS reform and additional funding, but we chose as a district to budget on the more conservative amount,” said O’Mara.

Mapleton School Board Chairman Carl West, a 19-year veteran of the board, said that although there were opportunities for public input on the budget, there were few comments.
