Road woes

In Dunes City there is a stretch of road on Ocean Boulevard at risk of collapse. The city has been aware of it for some time, but is in a quandary about funding the approximately $250,000 project.

The section of road is near Oceanís intersection with Lake Boulevard, where about 100 lineal feet of bank has dropped one to two feet, creating a safety hazard.

According to The Dyer Partnership, a Coos Bay-based company that evaluated the road, the reason for the bank movement is the fluctuating water zone, which varies as much as six feet. The varying lake levels transport sand and undermine the embankment.

ďA large storm event will most likely cause the entire bank to slip, resulting in a roadway collapse,Ē wrote Dyerís project manager in a report to City Hall last year.

With no tax base and limited funds, a project of this size requires the city to seek additional funding sources.
