Mapleton schools to increase focus on college, careers

Posted: Tuesday, Jun 18th, 2013

Cheryl Mathews

Cheryl Mathews began the 2012-2013 school year at Mapleton High School as office assistant, but has assumed new duties that will be more evident next school year.

Mathews will counsel students on careers and college, her area of expertise. With 30 years’ teaching experience, Mathews formerly served as counselor, National Honor Society adviser and ASPIRE (a career and college mentoring program) coordinator at Siuslaw High School.

“This has always been my passion. It’s my love,” said Mathews, who added that although she enjoyed working in the office, working directly with students is right up her alley.

“I have started meeting with every student to do their forecasting for next year. I am talking to them about college and career plans, goals and their transcript. We are going over courses for next year.”

Mathews will schedule speakers for each month to discuss potential careers.

She will meet with students to go through the Oregon Careers Information System (CIS) program.
