A 17-acre development in north Florence, which has been on and off the drawing table over the past years, is once again taking shape, and meetings are being held to collect public comment as construction permits fall into place.

Cannery Station is a planned unit development (PUD) that will be built in a number of stages that could take a decade to complete. The developer, Arlie and Co. of Eugene, is putting together a mixed-use project it intends to include commercial space, apartments, townhouses, cottages and assisted living facilities.

“It’s a new approach to development for Florence,” said Jacob Callister, a city planner who is working for the city through the Lane Council of Governments. “It would be a real asset.”
