Port commissioners plan for future

Posted: Tuesday, Jun 25th, 2013

At the last regular meeting for outgoing members John Scott, John Buchanan, Robert Thorp and John Murphey, whose terms end July 1, the Port of Siuslaw Board of Commissioners on Wednesday adopted a five-year strategic business plan, a $1.4 million budget, and a new mission statement — all within about 30 minutes.

The process to create the final 119-page strategic plan, however, started more than a year ago, and a draft has been available for public comment since early this year. The document identifies challenges, goals, strategies and action steps.

The document will guide the port until 2018, and is geared toward its mission, to provide “asset management and services that enhance economic and community development.”

The port is not without its challenges. Only 27 percent of its revenue comes from taxes. It relies on funds from leasing commercial property and RV campground fees, as well as fuel sales, moorage, storage, parking and other fees. Repair and replacement of infrastructure is primarily funded through grants, which often require matching funds.
