Fourth of July activities, Thursday in Old Town, start with the annual pie-eating and watermelon contests, this year at 1499 Bay St., the Silver Sand Dollar. Registration to enter is at 12:30 p.m. and the contest runs from 1 until 2 p.m. The event is hosted by the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce.
The annual Kiwanis Duck Race goes afloat in the Siuslaw River at the Port of Siuslaw boat launch at 12 p.m. Tickets are still available from local Kiwanians.
The fireworks display follows on the river at dark-thirty. Staging for the fireworks barge is in the middle of the river channel, adjacent to the boardwalk at the port. Be sure to listen to KCST Radio for patriotic music to accompany the display.For the complete article see the 06-29-2013 issue.
