Help keep our parks beautiful

Posted: Tuesday, Jul 2nd, 2013

Florence Parks Supervisor Mark Durbin, left, speaks with visitors, including a local Boy Scout leader, about organizing groups to help maintain city parks.

The city hosted an open house last week with the hope of breathing some new life into its Adopt A Park program.

Stalwart volunteers have been taking care of several of Florence’s parks for many years, but since the city has trimmed its parks staff, plenty more hands could be used.

“We have a tremendous asset with our parks,” said Mike Miller at city hall Thursday night, June 27. Miller is the director of public works for the city. “We’ve gone down to one full-time person (in the parks department), and we do have some seasonal help, but we are looking for some of that volunteer spirit.”

Miller and staff described the number of parks and trails the city must maintain — some many in the audience had never heard of — and the different tasks volunteers can help with, in particular, picking up litter, pulling weeds, caring for the planted areas, raking leaves and sweeping courts.

Equally important to performing basic upkeep, citizens are asked to help keep an eye on the facilities and report to public works any of the bigger problems, like vandalism, broken equipment and such.

The city has more than 20 developed parks and trails.

Katya Reyna, a student working for the city as a Resource Assistant for Rural Environments (RARE), is helping coordinate the revitalizing effort. Reyna has spearheaded numerous environmental programs during her time in Florence.

She asked that volunteers be willing to commit to a year of service with the parks department, working a minimum of four hours a quarter.
