DUNES CITY — Dunes City officials announced Monday that a new stainless steel kayak portage at the Siltcoos River Dam has been installed.

The portage, which is basically a ramp and walkway over the dam, gives river paddlers a throughway to the ocean along the Siltcoos River Canoe Trail.

The trail is a three-mile paddle to the Pacific Ocean and brings hundreds of visitors to the area each year.

In 2011 the boaters were complaining to the city that corrosion was breaking down the ramp and handrails. At that time, many of the newcomers in Dunes City were not even aware that their city was responsible for maintaining the portage.

City Recorder Fred Hilden learned that the city was licensed by the Department of State Lands for construction, maintenance, repair and replacement of the facility that is actually located on International Paper Co.’s dam.

The public recreation facility license covers the period of May 23, 2000, through May 22, 2015, and was intended to boost the area’s recreational value. Also, state grant money was available at the time to help fund it.
