On Friday, July 5, the Port of Siuslaw held a grand opening for the new Hiker-Biker Camp at the port’s campground at 100 Harbor St. in Florence.

During the celebration, Port Manager Robert Forsythe praised three people for providing the inspiration for the new camp.

“Chris Wherity, Scott Gamron and Paula Burnette contacted me last year about the need for more services for cyclists and hikers who travel through Florence each year. Thanks to their suggestion, we are happy to announce the port’s Hiker-Biker Camp is open for business,” said Forsythe.

Port Commission President Ron Caputo attended the ribbon-cutting celebration, along with Florence Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Cal Applebee and about 20 guests. Forsythe and Michele Douglass, a biking and hiking enthusiast and PeaceHealth foundation specialist, held the red ribbon while Wherity manned the giant scissors to commemorate the grand opening.

The new 12-site camping area is designated just for bicycle and pedestrian travelers and overlooks the scenic Siuslaw River estuary at the east end of the campground. The hiker-biker campsites are available on a first come-first served basis.
