Composer in the house

Posted: Tuesday, Jul 16th, 2013

Jesse Reeves, the youngest composer chosen to participate at the recent Oregon Bach Festival Composers Symposium, awaits a festival performance with other artists under the direction of renowned conductor and artist Craig Hella Johnson.
Jesse Reeves, 16, is very matter-of-fact about his talent. The youngest composer ever invited to the Oregon Bach Festival Composers Symposium, he finds it amusing that anyone would consider him gifted. But whether he admits it or not, he is extraordinary.

The son of John and Linda Reeves, the Mapleton High School student will be a junior this fall. His father is a retired logger; his mother works in medical records at the local hospital. The family lives near Deadwood in a home Reeves has lived in his entire life.

My family isnt particularly musical. My dad is a little bit, I guess. He comes from the South and likes the standard-type of guitar, said Reeves.

His dad likes country music. His mom likes rock. Reeves, however, has been a classical and jazz music fan from as far back as he can remember. One of his earliest memories is playing a keyboard.

I tried writing little melodies, he said. A couple years ago, I found scraps of paper from those days. I used my own odd notation, a cipher that I cant even read at this point.
