Even though the local theater has been struggling publicly in the past year, the closed doors this week came as a surprise to the city’s few moviegoers.
Florence Cinemas, at 1930 Highway 101, has been the town’s only movie theater for about the last nine years, after the old single-screen movie house, the Harbor Theater on Bay Street, closed. The Harbor is now the popular retail store, On Your Feet With a Splash.
It’s been a while since the Cinemas flourished. Former Florence Cinemas theater managers in 2009 decided to throw in the towel after their lease expired.
“I want out of the theater business,” said then-manager Mark Morgan. “It’s just too much work.”
The latest manager, Ray Welch, echoed much the same sentiment.
Welch, who said he has already moved back to his home base in Connecticut, has been managing the four-screen multiplex with owner and partner Sharon Lemanquais since October 2009.
He announced last September that the theater was headed for trouble because it was becoming difficult to obtain movies on film. Digital projection via Internet is the way of technology these days, and the multiplex doesn’t have such equipment nor the funds to pay for it, Welch said. For the complete article see the 07-20-2013 issue.
