Protected in perpetuity

Congressman Peter DeFazio was one of many celebrating the protection of Big Creek.
It is difficult to imagine that the spectacular site of Big Creek, 14 miles north of Florence on the central Oregon coast, was once considered the perfect place for a nuclear power plant. Plans for a luxury resort are more easily imagined. Vistas of the Pacific Ocean and elegant arch of a C.B McCullough-designed bridge would have delighted resort patrons. The 193-acre parcel of critical fish and wildlife habitat is no longer under threat of becoming any of those things. On Tuesday, a group gathered at the spot to celebrate the end of a 40-year battle to save the land from development.
