Volunteers and workers move the scale model of a sawmill to its new home Sept. 12 at the Siuslaw Pioneer Museum in Old Town. Delbert Phelps checks the measurements of the new exhibit.

Delbert Phelps, president of the Siuslaw Pioneer Museum, was like a kid in a candy store Thursday afternoon when a truck pulled up to the back door of the museum to deliver a complete sawmill.

The one-inch-to-the-foot scale model, donated by the High Desert Museum in Bend, brings Phelps back to the days when he worked for his uncle, Orville Phelps, who owned a sawmill in Mapleton. The mill was later sold to the Davidson family.

“I remember working there when I was about 11 years old. I didn’t get paid then, but I got to work with the men,” recalled Phelps.
