JONESóJoseph Marlin Jones died on Sept. 11, 2013, as a result of accumulated gross injuries sustained when he was shot in the back while trying to walk away from a verbal confrontation on his property in Creswell on Dec. 23, 1998.
Joe was born on July 16, 1960, in Yreka, Calif., and was adopted by Marlin A. and Floy (Berry) Jones at the age of 6. He grew up in Mapleton and graduated from Mapleton High School in 1978.
He served in the U.S. Army in Germany from 1978 to 1981.
He married Janielle R. Van Cleave in Florence on March 7, 1982.
Joe worked for Kinney Shoes, Bohemia Lumber Company-Coburg Mill, and several excavation companies in the Eugene-Springfield area. He enjoyed playing basketball, hunting, and working on his property with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Janielle; son, Jason, attending USU in Besthesda, MD; daughter, Julia, attending OSU in Corvallis; sisters, Evelyn Young and Barbara Beckner of Salem; Betty Lowder of Mapleton; Marilyn Beydler of Klamath Falls; Renee Lichtenhahn of Kenmare, N.D.; Joanna Meyer, Angel McInerny and Leslie Foster of Portland; brothers, Ivan Beydler of Portland and Gary Montgomery of Norway; mother-in-law, Anna Van Cleave of Florence; sisters-in-law, Susan Burkhart of Florence, and Joan Sonnenburg of Roseburg and numerous nieces and nephews.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Marlin and Floy Jones of Mapleton; father-in-law, Emmett Van Cleave of Florence; and brother, Grant Sexton of Mapleton.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 2 p.m. at Creswell Church of Christ, 380 Kings Row, Creswell, Ore. Arrangements in the care of Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel.
