Guided tour

Posted: Friday, Nov 1st, 2013

Port Manager Robert Forsythe shows Rep. Caddy McKeown (D–Coos Bay) submerged milled lumber at the shoreline of the marina in Florence, believed to come from the long-defunct O.W. Hurd Mill. The lumber may be used in the future to create art benches and a mill dedication site in the area of the boardwalk. McKeown stopped by the Port of Siuslaw office on Oct. 30 to meet with commissioners and Forsythe and tour port property in Old Town. Port issues are nothing new to the state legislator, who in 2003 was appointed by Gov. Ted Kulongoski to the board of commissioners of the Oregon International Port of Coos Bay, on which she served for nine years. The tour led to discussions about debt from completed projects, for example, the recent wharf improvement, and the burden of paying for future non-revenue-producing capital improvements, such as anticipated repairs to the bulkhead.
