From crossing guard to state rep

MAPLETON — Mapleton High School students learned last week that serving in the state legislature could be an attainable goal after a visit from Rep. Caddy McKeown (D-Coos Bay). A packed audience met with the state representative in their school’s new College and Career Corner, where McKeown described her career path and decisions she made to get there.

“I invited her because she has a passion for education,” said Cheryl Mathews, who advises students at the school about jobs, education and scholarships. “I thought it would really be a wonderful way to start our career program.”

Elected last year to represent House District 9, McKeown described a relatable, inauspicious start to public service.
