Quiet New Year’s, despite DUII arrests

Posted: Friday, Jan 3rd, 2014

This New Year’s holiday is only the third since 1970 that Oregon law enforcement agencies reported no traffic fatalities in the state during the 30-hour reporting period, according to preliminary statistics released Thursday.

Oregon Department of Transportation’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System has kept a record of traffic fatalities since 1970 and shows that there were none reported in 2003 (30-hour period) and 2010 (78-hour period).

This year’s reporting period took place between 6 p.m., Dec. 31, 2013, and 11:59 p.m., Jan. 1, 2014, with no traffic-related deaths recorded.

Reporting periods may be different lengths depending on the day of the week the holiday falls on, said Oregon State Police.
