Celebrating a milestone

Modified: Tuesday, Jan 14th, 2014

In Mapleton, standing between the 1964 Siuslaw Valley Bank logo and the newer Siuslaw Bank logo, is Relationship Specialist Melissa Phillips, who has been employed for 35 years at the company. Phillips is one of many long-time employees who provide continuity in customer service for bank customers. The board of directors for the Siuslaw Valley Bank, now called Siuslaw Bank, were featured in a special Mapleton section of the Jan. 23, 1964, issue of the Siuslaw News. The bank first opened for business 50 years ago. Board members were A. E. “Pony” Ellingson, Steven Vaughn, Johan Mehlum, Don Lee Davidson and William J. Beck. Mehlum is currently board chairman and CEO of Siuslaw Bank’s holding company, Siuslaw Financial Group.

When Siuslaw Valley Bank opened its doors for the first time on Jan. 17, 1964, Mapleton was a booming timber town. Fifty years later, most of the mills and logging operations that kept the economy humming are quiet, but the bank is still there, having grown from one small establishment to 10 offices throughout Lane County, where it is the county’s oldest independent community bank.

Now called Siuslaw Bank, its president and CEO Lonnie Iholts said it remains true to its original principles.
