Relay For Life of Florence, an annual fundraising event for the American Cancer Society (ACS), held its 2014 kickoff Monday night at Best Western Pier Point Inn. This year’s theme is Heroes Finish the Fight, and amid the party-like atmosphere and cape-wearing committee members, participants were reminded of the importance of their fundraising efforts. Next to the federal government, ACS is the No. 1 funder of cancer research in the world and currently provides more than $5.3 million for research in Oregon. This year’s event is Aug. 8 and 9 at Miller Park. Participants at the annual kickoff included (clockwise from top right) Karen Earnshaw, survivor chairwoman; musicians John Stone and Marty Adams; John Bartlett, John Murphy and Jean Murphy, team development; middle, left to right, Bonnie Ell, Relay specialist and Dr. Joseph Fiorillo of Willamette Valley Cancer Institute; Dina Pavlis promoting Bark For Life; and Nicole Hundley, Oregon Pacific Bank team leader. For the complete article see the 01-29-2014 issue.
