Tree cleanup too drastic for park visitors

Trees have been removed in many popular areas of the park, expanding a beach, revealing nearly lost picnic benches and removing weak trees. But did the park engineers go too far?
Visitors to Jessie M. Honeyman State Park will notice a lot of changes at the Cleawox Lake swimming area and lodge when they arrive this summer.

In fact, many recent visitors, especially locals who are familiar with the park, have been completely shocked by the changes.

Park staff and contractors have removed stands of what they claim were weak and dying trees primarily from around the lodge, swimming area and picnic tables. Fewer than about 70 acres, or about 2,000 trees, were removed.
