Student stewards go to work on dunes, Scotch broom

Siuslaw seventh graders from Andy Marohlís class went to the Oregon Dunes Day Use Area last week to join the fight against Scotch broom, one of Oregonís worst invasive plants.

Armed with gloves, ratchet loppers and large weed pullers, students freed an open space on the hillside for native plants to re-establish. Students picked up where Siuslaw fourth graders left off in March, and where previous classes have been going for the last five years.

Project organizer Jim Grano said, ďThese kids can see the difference theyíve made, and thatís something they can have pride in every time they come back here.Ē
