Oscar Biggerstaff Wise

Posted: Friday, Jun 13th, 2014

WISEóOscar Biggerstaff Wise, 91, of Florence, passed away June 7, 2014, due to natural causes.

He was born to Samuel and Ruby Wise with his twin brother, Austin, in Carl Junction, Mo. Oscarís father died when he was a young man, so at the age of 12 he quit school to pick beets in Idaho and then went to work on the railroads to support his mom and siblings until he joined the Army.

Before he moved to Florence, Oscar served as an Army veterinarian in World War II. Oscar moved to the Florence area in 1948 with his family. He worked in the local mills for 45 years at U.S. Plywood and Davidsonís in Mapleton.

He first lived in Cushman, where he had a vegetable and flower garden. People passing by would come back to see if they could buy his goods. He never sold anything, only gave it away.

Oscar would grow a garden big enough to feed 50 people so he could also take his vegetables into the banks and grocery stores to give to the clerks. He continued to do this well into his 80s.

His home was always a safe haven for anyone in need. He always offered food, a warm place and lots of advice. He enjoyed people, talking, singing, playing the harmonica and fiddle, fishing, hunting, bowling and his pride and joy was his 1966 Rambler Ambassader.

He is survived by his wife, Hideko, of 32 years; his son, Dennis; and daughter, Kathy, from his first marriage; adopted daughter, Wendy; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

There will be an announcement for a celebration of life at a later date.

Burnsís Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
