Earlier this month, Haring family descendants and friends gathered at the Haring Pioneer Cemetery on North Fork Siuslaw Road to clear overgrown vegetation from the 22 known grave sites in the small two-acre burial ground begun by the Haring family in 1883.

According to family member La Vaughn Kemnow, “We located most of the grave sites, some by accidentally stepping on headstones that were flush with the ground, or coming within one step of them. We cleaned around them, removing dirt, debris and blackberry and ivy vines from them.”

Siuslaw Pioneer Museum Board President Del Phelps said that nine years ago the museum was given the deed to the property on which the cemetery is located. Before the museum took over, family members and neighbors maintained the cemetery. Due to coordinating issues and lack of volunteers, the family had to pitch in again.
