Vikings back on the grid

Posted: Friday, Jul 18th, 2014

Members of the Viking varsity football team took to the practice field for the first time this summer during the annual 7-on-7 mini camp with Sheldon High School, marking the start of the upcoming football season.
Since 1929, the Viking football team has been taking to the gridiron to battle teams from the league in an attempt to claim the state title. And 85 years later, the sound of cleats across the grass and thud of players practicing tackles still ushers in the beginning of the summer preparation period for the fall football season.

This week, those sounds returned to the practice field behind Siuslaw High School, where head coach Tim Dodson and his assistant coaches began the process of building a team in spirit as much as bodies.

“You’re part of something special,” Dodson told his players as they kneeled in the grass between drills. “You’re a part of this school’s history every time you step onto this field wearing the blue and gold.”

Come late August, when the Vikings host Newport for the season opener, no doubt the stands will be full of excited fans ready to witness the next chapter in the Viking history book.
