ATV crash claims life

Local woman dies in Deadwood area recreational vehicle accident

Area resident Sara Smith, 26, died in a single vehicle ATV accident Sunday in the Deadwood area.

Oregon State Police (OSP) Public Information Officer Sergeant Jeff Proulx said in a statement, “At approximately 4:15 p.m. on May 21, OSP responded to the Mapleton Valley Fire Department after hearing on the radio of a woman being transported by a friend to the fire department with serious injuries.”

Medical personnel and OSP performed CPR on the female, identified as Smith, before she was transported to PeaceHealth Peace Harbor Medical Center, where she died of her injuries.

Western Lane Ambulance District also responded.

The preliminary OSP investigation determined that Smith was riding an ATV by herself in the Deadwood area and, for an unknown reason, crashed.

OSP is continuing the investigation to determine the cause and location of the crash.

Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue Chief Jim Langborg said, “Western Lane Ambulance sends our heartfelt sympathy to the friends and family of our patient.”

Langborg is Western Lane’s administrator.

According to an Oregon Pacific Bank representative, an anonymous Florence community member has opened a memorial account at the bank to collect donations for the family of Smith.

Community members wishing to donate in support of Smith’s family are welcome to visit Oregon Pacific Bank and ask that the funds be placed in the Sara Smith Memorial Fund.
